Point-of-Care Perspectives from PatientPoint

HIMSS19 Preview: Triple Aim Takes Center Stage

by PatientPoint

It’s almost here: HIMSS19, the mother of all health IT conferences. Conference organizers have billed this year’s mega-show in Orlando to be the place where “champions of health unite.”

As our own PatientPoint champions of health prepare for the event, we see the Triple Aim of improving quality, decreasing costs and improving patient satisfaction dominating the narrative.

Here’s how we see these themes playing out at HIMSS19, as well as some of the sessions we’re looking forward to attending (and reporting back about!):

Improving Quality

It should come as no surprise that there is an entire HIMSS19 track dedicated to “Improving Quality Outcomes Through Health Information & Technology.” As value-based care takes hold and quality payment program initiatives commence in 2019, physicians are embracing the new paradigm of delivering quality of care versus quantity of care. The good news is that the industry has been preparing for a value-based system. Nearly a quarter of U.S. physicians say they’re providing value-based care, and another 29% say they’ll get there in the next three years.

Lowering Costs

U.S. healthcare costs ballooned to an all-time high of $3.5 trillion in 2017, a whopping 18 percent of GDP. That said, it’s a no-brainer that strategies to reduce this economic burden will receive top billing at HIMSS19. While they will take years to implement, these strategies get back to basics—think collaboration, efficiency and prevention—to cut costs. What do these strategies look like? For starters, delivering a coordinated care experience that revolves around the patient and favors quality over quantity. Providers, hospitals, health systems and payors are also hard at work to realign healthcare delivery to focus on preventive care to stop issues before they start. We can’t wait to hear about their progress.

Improving Patient Satisfaction

When it comes to healthcare, patients are buyers with choices. According to a recent study conducted by HIMSS Analytics, fewer than half of patients said they were extremely or very satisfied with their experience. HIMSS19 will emphasize reversing this trend and anticipating patients’ needs before they do. We are especially looking forward to seeing examples of how HCPs are leveraging technology to drive patient satisfaction.
